B.C. COVID-19 update: 553 new cases, one death

B.C. health authorities reported 553 new cases of COVID-19 today, one of which is epidemiologically linked. Since the pandemic began, B.C. has recorded 157,567 cases.

Of the new cases, 97 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 152 in the Fraser Health region, 38 in the Island Health region, 230 in the Interior Health region, 36 in the Northern Health region and no new cases of people who reside outside of Canada.

The latest local data from the B.C. Centre for Disease Control shows there were 57 cases in Richmond last week (Aug. 8-14). This is an increase from the 47 reported the previous week (Aug. 1-7), and 21 the week before that (July 25-31).

Across B.C. there are 5,580 active cases of COVID-19 and 107 of those people are hospitalized, 53 of whom are in intensive care. 

To date, 7,265,222 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C.; 3,419,832 of those are second doses. 

This means that 83.6 per cent of adults and 82.8 per cent of people aged 12 and older have received their first dose of a vaccine. In addition, 75.1 per cent of adults and 73.8 per cent of those aged 12 and older have received two doses.

Sadly, there was one new virus-related death reported today, bringing that total to 1,782.

Health authorities reported one new healthcare facility outbreak. Active outbreaks continue at eight long-term care facilities and three assisted or independent living facilities.
